  • What are the prerequisites for Instructor License Applicants?

    In accordance with LA RS 37:3284E(3-6), an applicant for an instructor license:


    “Has a minimum of three years supervisory experience with a contract security company, proprietary security organization, or with any federal, state, parochial, municipal, or United States military law enforcement agency; or

    Degree in administration of justice or the equivalent thereof from an accredited college or university; or


    P.O.S.T. certified instructor; or

    Teaching certificate issued by the state of Louisiana, Department of Education, or the equivalent thereof, and one year supervisory experience in the security field.”

  • What are the prerequisites for Firearms Instructors?

    Armed Instructors must meet the above qualifications as well as the following in accordance with LA RS 37:3284F:


    “Has successfully completed training and possesses a National Rifle Association Security or Police Firearms Instructor certificate, or a P.O.S.T. Firearm Instructor Certificate, or a Department of Energy Firearms Instructor Certificate, or certification by a branch of the United States military.”


    No other certifications are accepted at this time.

  • What types of work DO NOT COUNT towards the 3 years of supervisory experience

    • Bail Bondsmen/Prison Guards – while these positions work closely with Law Enforcement, they do not have authority to arrest, execute criminal warrants or perform searches and seizures.
    • Military Service – the only military experience which qualifies you for instructor licensure is Military Law Enforcement. General military experience, even if you performed duties as a security officer while serving, do not count towards the needed experience.
    • Non-supervisory experience – experience as a security guard or Law Enforcement officer that does not include supervisory duties.
  • What are the different types of Instructor Licenses?

    • In-House - licensed with a security company and may only teach security officers employed with that company.
    • Outside - licensed to train anyone in the state of Louisiana.
    • Outside Limited―licensed to teach students at a training academy or educational institution. Instructor may only teach students of that particular institution.
    • Classroom – licensed to teach the state-required first and second 8-hour training courses for registered guards.

    Firearms – licensed to teach the state-required armed training courses for armed guards.

  • What documentation will I need for my Instructor License Application?

    • Resume- needs to list verifiable dates of employment
    • Fingerprint Authorization Form - available here https://lsbpse.com/forms/
    • Driver’s License and Social Security Card – no other forms of identification will be accepted
    • Full Face Photograph – this will go on your profile for identification purposes.
    • Certificate of General Liability Insurance – Certificate must show $100,000 of General Liability coverage with the State of Louisiana listed as Additional Insured and Certificate Holder, OR letter from employer stating that the instructor will be covered by the company’s general liability policy to instruct and list the expiration dates of the policy.
    • DD-214 – military discharge papers showing type of discharge, if applicable.
    • Certification Documents – instructor/teaching certifications, POST, NRA or Police instructor certifications as outlined in La RS 37:3284 E & F.
    • Fingerprint Cards – two sets of classifiable fingerprints on FBI fingerprint cards. The top of the card needs to be fully filled out. Cards must be mailed or dropped off at our office and include a cover letter stating they are for a Company License Application
    • Course Curriculum – Complete course of study (Training Manual), including examinations and answer sheets, or letter from employer stating that instructor will use training materials on file at the board office. Classroom applicants must supply their second 8-hour course materials. The first 8-hour course materials will be provided for you. Firearms instructors must supply their firearms course materials.
  • How do I get an Instructor License Application

    Send an email request to julie@lsbpse.com and the application will be pushed to you in the portal. Request must contain your name, phone number and home address.

  • What do I do with my fingerprints?

    Fingerprint cards must be mailed or dropped off to our office and must include a cover letter stating they are for an Instructor License Application. Our office is located at 15703 Old Hammond Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA 70816

  • What is the application fee, what does it include, and how can I pay it?

    The base fee for Instructor Applications is $127.97 and includes application, exam, fingerprint, and administrative fees. Additional License fees will apply based on the level of instructor applied for.

    • In-house or Outside Classroom: $100
    • In-house or Outside Firearms: $150
    • Outside Limited Classroom or Firearms: $75
    • In-house or Outside Straight Baton: $100
    • In-house or Outside PR 24 Baton: $50
    • Outside Limited Straight or PR 24 Baton: $50

    THESE FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. Fees will be paid through the portal when the application is complete.

  • What is on the Instructor’s Exam?

    The Owner’s Exam pulls directly from the Laws and Rules governing our industry in Louisiana.

  • When can I take the Instructor’s Exam?

    When your application has been completed and paid for you will be contacted to schedule the Instructor’s Exam.

  • Is my application fee refundable if my application is denied?

    No. All fees paid to the board are NON-REFUNDABLE

  • When will my Instructor License be issued?

    After receipt of an application for a license, the board shall conduct an investigation to determine whether the facts set forth in the application are true. Within sixty days after receipt of an application, the board shall either issue a license to the applicant or notify the applicant of a denial of the license application. The board will review company applications at regularly scheduled quarterly board meetings.
